Unilateral withdrawal was tried once by Israel–its exit from the West Bank in 2004. For a variety of reasons the effort was fraught with difficulties. In essence, though, it ignored the need to engage both sides to make any move work. Increased security will not emerge from a scorched earth policy. Israeli security will depend on close collaboration with the Palestinian leadership and agreed parameters for the new borders that will emerge. Negotiations are the only path to a lasting peace.
